The critically endangered West African chimpanzee has already disappeared in Benin, Togo and Burkina Faso as they are threatened by deforestation, poaching, and capture for the pet trade.
In Liberia, there are vast areas of prime chimpanzee habitat available.
In the last few years there has been an improvement in law enforcement in the country, causing a massive influx in confiscated chimpanzees and orphans. Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection takes care of confiscated and abandoned chimpanzees.
It costs between R70 000 and R100 000 per year to care for one chimpanzee. These primates arrive with medical conditions, depression and emotional trauma. Orphans are offered quality veterinary care and around the clock nurturing.
